Our Strategy
Since 2005, IFRA and RIFM have been functioning as one global organization, with RIFM focusing on risk assessment and IFRA on risk management, communication and advocacy.
IFRA’s strategy is built around four pillars:
IFRA's scientific activities concentrate on developing, communicating and implementing the IFRA Code of Practice. The Code of Practice provides Standards of good operating practice and product safety, and has been used by companies since 1973. Amendments and updates are issued on a regular basis.
IFRA Standards regarding use restrictions are based on safety assessments by REXPAN, the independent RIFM Panel of Experts, and are carefully reviewed by the IFRA Scientific Committee, and formatted in applicable rules by IFRA.
Through its technical advocacy activities, IFRA provides scientific input to regulatory bodies around the world, thereby influencing constructively and positively emerging or existing regulatory initiatives.
IFRA has engaged in a communication program with the intention to promote the concept of "safe enjoyment of fragrances". Through constructive engagement with the media and policymakers, IFRA aims to encourage a more balanced public debate regarding the safety of the ingredients used in composing fragrances. The key audiences for IFRA are customers of the industry and their associations, media, NGOs, policy makers, scientific circles and members of the fragrance industry.
IFRA launched its Compliance Policy in May 2006. The IFRA Compliance Policy objective is to verify that the Code of Practice and in particular the IFRA Standards are applied and adhered to. It involves the analysis of fragrances in a variety of consumer products on a worldwide basis.
