Program Overview

The IFRA Code of Practice is intended to ensure the safe use of fragrance ingredients. IFRA, as the global regulatory authority of the fragrance industry, implements a Compliance Program in order to ensure that its Code of Practice and Standards are fully adhered to by its members and that consumer products containing fragrances can be safely used.

The Focus

Full adherence to the requirements of the Code of Practice and proof thereof is regarded crucial to the fragrance industry’s credibility and reputation.
The IFRA Compliance Program is organized in two parts:

1. Collection of Statements of Assurance of Compliance

This task, which is already finished, consisted in verifying that IFRA Member Associations have included the compliance requirements to the Code of Practice in their Statutes (requirement for membership).

2. Implementation of a Verification of Compliance Program

This consists in an analysis focused on the detection of fragrance ingredients that have been prohibited (or restricted) by IFRA under the IFRA Code of Practice. Three categories of Consumer Products are analyzed: fine fragrances, body care and household products.

Some Key Points

The IFRA Compliance Program:

  • Involves both the fragrance manufacturers/suppliers and the consumer products manufacturers in the process, in order to ensure the highest degree of safe use of fragrances in consumer products.
  • Follows procedures for the observance of confidentiality intended to protect intellectual property.
  • Includes the concept of the designation of an “IFRA Liaison” person, as a recommended option for each company and designated by each company. The IFRA Liaison is an internal person in charge of the company’s overall (global) participation in the Compliance Program.
